Step On.
Step On is the longest-running indie night in Dubai, founded in a moment of madness several years ago – four? Five? We've got it written down somewhere – by DJ, promoter and charlatan Mark Evans, or 'ME' (see what he did there?), and fellow spinner Conor P. Conor, one of the best lo-fi/raregroove/eclectic DJs in Dubai, knew shit all about indie, and promptly left SO after one night.
Matt Ross, a beautiful, charming and below-average-height indie lover from Stockport, replaced him behind the decks, bringing with him an aura of mystery and the world’s shittiest Audi TT, which was literally held together with sticky tape and nails. Nails. In a f*cking car? Come on, now. Such was Matt's beauty that Step On had to organise a deli-style 'take a number' ticket system for girls to chat/touch him, which they did for more than two years, before Matt was tragically killed in a freak moose-related accident.
Enter Rude Larry, a sometime SO cohort and long time comedy trouser wearer. Rude, who had made several SO guest appearances in the past, the last of which culminating in a strange girl stealing his favourite trilby hat, made a quick dash to the local millinery store to buy their most comedic efforts – including a tartan red number. We shit you not – and was back in business.Having called several venues home, including Chi, Jimmy Dixx, Trilogy and now Catwalk, at the Golden Tulip, Al Barsha, Step On continues to amaze, shock, offend and threaten its way through Friday nights in Dubai.
Past guests have included (in no particular order) Razorlight, Bez (Happy Mondays), The Charlatans, Just Jack, Kasier Chiefs, Matthew ‘Gavin’ Horne (Gavin & Stacey), Dan Greenpeace, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Michael ‘Naboo’ Fielding (The Mighty Boosh), Athlete, Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly, The Futureheads, Carl Barat (Libertines), Zane Lowe and a lots more people that we loved, but can’t quite remember now.
Step On does, and always will do, operate a strict no mingers policy. Mingers affect the lives of many. There is still no known cure for someone that’s minging, except maybe a bag over the head, but we can raise awareness. If you, or anyone you know has been affected by a minger in your life, then Step On is here to help.Step On. Indie Pogo For Punks In Pumps. Please, strictly no mingers.
