A modern interpretation of Alexander Belyaev’s famous novel by Golden Mask award winners

A young journalist is thrown into the sea with weights tied to her legs. She was meant to drown, but someone brings her back to life. Her rescue becomes the beginning of a story that changes people’s destinies and raises questions about the future of humanity.

The familiar plot is transformed into a romantic body horror production, told through a series of dramatic video essays — a parable and a manifesto at the same time. The new habitat of the “Sea Devil” is shaped by global capitalism, ecological anxiety, and universal uncertainty.

The creators of the production are recipients of prestigious theatre awards. Director Dmitry Melkin and playwright Mikhail Durnenkov are Golden Mask laureates. Composer Dmitry Pavlyukov has worked for many years as a sound designer with Liquid Theatre on productions recognised by theatre critics.

The role of Guttiere, the journalist, is performed by Maria Kurdenevich; Ichthyander is played by Brusnikin Workshop actor Gladstone Makhib; Vladimir Mishukov portrays the scientist who challenged the laws of nature; and the visionary Manuel is played by Vadik Korolev, lead singer of the indie pop band OQJAV.

In this production, sound design is not just a background element but a full-fledged voice. A giant aero screen created specifically for the performance provides the physical sensation of immersion. Real sand covers the stage.

The myth of Ichthyander becomes an honest conversation with oneself about choice, independence, and the price paid by anyone who tries to remain human. Adults and teenagers who are not afraid to dive deeply into complex topics will find it fascinating to explore difficult questions about love, growing up, power, nature, and technology.

The premiere of The Amphibian Man took place by the sea in Cyprus. This is the production’s first tour.

Gladston Mahib, Vadim Korolev, Mariya Kurdenevich, Vladimir Mishukov.
