Violin Concerto Gala at Dubai Opera

On 18th February, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) returns to the Dubai Opera for an eclectic concert featuring works by Puccini and Mendelssohn, as well as contemporary composers Joseph Vella, Alexey Shor and Euchar Gravina. Beginning with a piece from Malta’s contemporary classical repertoire, the MPO will open the concert with a performance of the late Joseph Vella’s symphonic poem Rebbieha, a work with a highly distinctive voice that both recognises the traditions of the past while embracing an unmistakable 20th century diversity of orchestral colours and harmonic expression. Next, the orchestra will be joined onstage by the recipient of the 2018 “Diapason d’Or” Award and Winner of the Benjamin Britten, Henri Marteau and Queen Elisabeth Violin Competitions, violinist Andrey Baranov, for a performance of Alexey Shor’s enchanting and virtuosic Violin Concerto in C Minor. After a short intermission, the orchestra will return for a performance of Puccini’s Preludio Sinfonico, a rousing and evocative work exhibiting the lush orchestral colours and unmistakably Italian melodic gestures that Puccini is known and loved for. Next, the MPO will present another Maltese work, this time by the young London-based Maltese composer Euchar Gravina, with a performance of his After Mahler. The evening is concluded by Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, a work that, in fact, represents the composer’s final concerto, and one that since its première in 1845 has secured its position as one of the violin’s most important works. This concert is presented by SAMIT Event Group and CMDI Group, with the support of the European Foundation for Support of Culture (EUFSC).
