Anwar Maqsood – oft described as the ‘Man with a Golden Pen’ – has an
illustrious 45 year career weaving his storytelling magic on TV. Here, he
writes one of his finest pieces for theatre, with KopyKats Productions’ first
smash hit ‘Pawnay 14 August’. The play ran for a wide variety of audiences
across Pakistan, and became a runaway success overnight. In total, there were
a 100 live performances of the theatrical masterpiece, which ran to packed
houses every day in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
‘Pawnay 14 August’ takes a satirical look on Pakistan’s current reality
through how the founders of Pakistan conceived the country to be and what it
is today. The play has a bold take on the three main forefathers of Pakistan –
the Quaid-e-Azam, Allama Iqbal and Maulana Shaukat Ali – who have come
back in time to see Pakistan as it stands today. Filled with their curiosity
and burning questions on the state of their beloved country, the story brings
to life key issues of contemporary Pakistani society, ranging from Politics,
Business, the Military and even the Film World etc. The play is set at the
bustling Karachi Airport, where each passenger arrives and departs with their
own story. This production helped bring together some of the finest theatre
actors in Pakistan today from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, with Dawar
Mehmood taking the Producer and Director’s seat.
