Yatra- Unraveling Life’s Journeys Through Dance

The hindi word Yatra means ‘journey’.

Avega Dance Creations (ADC) unpacks that term in their latest dance-theatre production of the same name. Yatra premieres on Thursday, 1st of August at The Junction, an intimate black-box theatre located in the culturally affluent Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, Dubai.

“It’s become our signature to journal our experiences onstage. This time the production will feature eight short stories talking about the most significant journeys we might have witnessed. These could be physical, emotional or spiritual” explains the founder and Creative Director of ADC, Shruthi Rameshan, “in simple terms, we are talking about how people travel with everything from weight-loss cycles and gender disparity to insomnia and loss of limbs.”, adds co-founder and Creative Director, Hitesh Rajani.

The company that pledges a deep-rooted commitment to soulful storytelling that mirrors everyday life, will bring together local talent from different dance genres like India classical, contemporary, b-boying, and hip hop to help bring the pieces to life.

“The idea of exploring the possibilities of the word ‘journey’ came to me when I was away on three-month hiatus in India, soaking in the dance and theatre scene there. Hopefully, we can reflect some of the technique and approach that I picked up there to bring something fresh onstage”, quips Shruthi. “She took a holiday and made a production out of it, quite literally life reflecting art. We feel like we bare our truth every time we go onstage”, Hitesh reflects,” we hope the audience connects.”
