Having been involved with the music industry for over 11 years, and at the forefront of the UAE’s electronic music scene for almost 6 of those, Mike ‘Mr Mr’ Bufton has proven that demand for fresh upfront and emerging music is still high on the regions agenda, successfully running & DJ’ing at Dubai’s longest standing 10 hour weekly event - audio tonic ‘Sunset Sessions’ @ 360º (every Friday), and of course producing/presenting his seminal weekly two hour Thursday night show on Radio 1 UAE, audio tonic – “adding the vital ingredient to your weekend” (6 years in May 2012) His efforts have gained him a solid and respected reputation, which have not gone unnoticed. In 2010, he came in at No 5 in the DJ Mag Middle East Top 50 DJ Poll, and was voted as ‘Best Local DJ’ in the Timeout Nightlife Awards. His night at 360º has been largely responsible for earning the venue a DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs of the world status, for 2 successive years, and won the accolade as Best House Music Night at the Timeout Nightlife Awards (2011). The night has also progressed to one of the finest spots in the capital Abu Dhabi, at Sea Lounge, Monte Carlo Beach Club every Thursday night. He has also been an official adidas Originals Brand Ambassador for over 4 years. With his focus on nurturing the future sound of House music, Mike is a highly adaptable jock in his own right, keeping his view on music educational, yet truly entertaining. From sunset moods, to melodic grooves, big bass lines and tech-laden rhythms, he has the capability of capturing a floor with his intricate and detailed attention too the art of mixing, flow of the set, frequencies & FX. Booking, warming up for and playing after the likes of Spirit Catcher, Sander Kleinenberg, Luke Fair, Funk D’Void, Ralph Lawson, Jody Wisternoff, James Zabiela, Shur-I-Kan, Florian Kruse, Hideo Kobayashi, Jimpster, and in June 2011 warming up the Flash Forum in Abu Dhabi with his ‘audio tonic peak time sound’ for Armin Van Buuren. His continued reliability with music has earned him private appearances for the likes of Michael Schumacher, Boris Becker, The Abu Dhabi Film Festival and The Laureus World Sports Awards, whilst keeping the UAE nightlife scene alive playing at the UAE’s most frequented clubs and events that include his ‘2nd home’ 360º, Trilogy, Nasimi Beach and Creamfields Abu Dhabi in 2009 & 2010, with 2011 seeing audio tonic host its own stand alone arena at the festival. In October 2011 the audio tonic Record label was launched, with Mike driving the project and overseeing the A&R alongside Raxon (audio tonic Resident). To date the label has released over 12 tracks and remixes from artists around the world, with positive support from the biggest names in the industry that include Hernan Cattaneo, Solomun, Jimpster and MANIK just to name a few. Mike is also a competent sound engineer, with a passion for radio advert production. His voice can be found across the region’s radio networks and television commercials, representing the likes of adidas ‘Originals’, Nokia, Jumeirah (360º) and the RTA for Dubai Metro. Starting off the main part of their career in their native home of London, they’ve cut their teeth on the underground club scene from the 90s and are going stronger than ever. Production-wise, they specialise in deep, Chicago-flavored House music with a Jacking vibe, the sort that’s seen them sign records to Roger Sanchez’s Stealth Records, DJ Sneak’s Magnetic Recordings and a string of releases on their own Illuminati Recordings imprint. The sort that has got them charted by every DJ worth his salt (and tequila), the sort of infectious, funk-laden, booty bouncing music that you just have to get down to. And when they’re not busy creating big-boomed bass beauties, the brothers are busy working on their numerous Podcasts (all available internationally through Apple’s iTunes), keeping the underground house scene very much alive and kicking. They’ve hosted radio shows for over 10 years, featuring a diverse range of guests ranging from: The Stereo MCs, Armand Van Helden, Roger Sanchez, Basement Jaxx, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Erick Morillo to DJ Sneak, Goldie Lookin’ Chain, Nic Fanciulli, Louis Osbourne, Mutiny, Steve Lawler and a lot more. But it’s perhaps on the DJ front that the brothers have made their biggest impact. With both Safe and Marko now based in Dubai, they hold down the most coveted residency in the Middle East at the much- copied but never bettered Nasimi Beach, a 5,000 capacity venue nestled on the edge of the seen-from- space Atlantis Hotel Resort. Recently Safe has signed a residency deal with the luxury restaurant brand Nobu and has also been behind the decks with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa himself. Not only have they turned a once unremarkable patch of sand into a consistently sold-out club thanks to a soundstorm of beats and bass, they’ve played alongside (and often closed) for Faithless, Roger Sanchez, Derrick Carter, Armand Van Helden, Basement Jaxx and many, many more. Alongside that, the Marko and Safe played at their third installment of Creamfields Abu Dhabi, dropped house bombas at Pete Tong’s Wonderland, El Divino Ibiza, Savannah Ibiza and Hed Kandi parties in Ibiza, spun at the legendary Turnmills, Pacha London, Ministry of Sound, Moneypennys in the UK & Ibiza and the world famous Miami Winter Music Conference. The most recent developments might be the best yet; Smokingroove along with a select few have become brand ambassadors for Adidas Originals, New Era & Pioneer DJ. They have also compiled and mixed the first in a series of Pacha Dubai CDs, which are on global sale. Away from the clubs, the London- born duo are just as busy. With more and more chart-winning material pumping out of their smoke-filled studio, this year see’s them investing more revenue into more and more studio equipment and a huge increase in tracks being released on their own Illuminati Records Imprint.
