One hundred years after its world premiere, Turandot returns to the stage in a landmark centenary presentation at Dubai Opera. This special anniversary staging honours the enduring legacy of Giacomo Puccini’s final opera, a work that has stood at the summit of the repertory since its historic debut.
Left unfinished at Puccini’s death and completed by Franco Alfano for its premiere, Turandot represents both an artistic culmination and a defining moment in operatic history. A century later, its scale, theatrical daring and emotional intensity remain undiminished.
The score unites lyrical intimacy with monumental choral and orchestral grandeur. Among its most celebrated passages are Signore ascolta, In questa reggia and Nessun dorma, each reinforcing the opera’s dramatic power and psychological depth.
Set in a stylised vision of ancient China, the drama centres on Princess Turandot, whose suitors must answer three riddles or face death. The arrival of the exiled Prince Calaf challenges this ritual of fear, setting in motion a transformation that ultimately affirms love over cruelty.
For this centenary presentation, Dubai Opera collaborates with the Chinese National Opera House, whose authentically Chinese production was created for international touring. The staging integrates Chinese and Italian artistic traditions through symbolic visual language, refined costume design and expansive choral architecture, reflecting both the opera’s cultural setting and its European musical foundation.
Commemorating 100 years since its first performance, this production invites audiences to experience Turandot not only as a masterpiece of opera, but as a work of enduring global resonance.
