They are two friends from Beirut with an urge to make music. They write and perform original music that speaks of love, exile, contradictions and dreams. Their sound has been described as a mixture of indie-pop, jazz and soul and is characterized by Elie’s harmonious chord progressions and Mayssa’s smooth, soaring vocals. SAFAR ‘s friendship goes way back, but they only came about as a band when they won the 1st Beirut Open Stage (BOS) competition in February 2013. Their 1st EP "23 KILOGRAMS" was recorded in November 2014 at Tunefork Studios and was produced by Fadi Tabbal and Safar. Musicians Salim Naffaa and Pascal Semerdjian accompanied us on bass and drums. The EP was released at Mansion in Zokak el Blatt Beirut on December 27th 2014. It contains 4 titles: "Overlove", "23 Kilograms", "Olive Oil Soul" and "Between the Trees". It is available on Itunes, Spotify, Anghami and at Virgin Megastores and Onomatopoeia in Lebanon. They have been experimenting with their sound, writing songs in English and Arabic, and collaborating with local musicians such as Zeid Hamdan (Nov 2014), Fareeq El Atrash (August 2014), Adonis (Dec 2013), Postcards (Dec 2014) and Loopstache (June 2013). We’ve been all around Beirut performing our own sets at venues such as Radio Beirut (Jan and Nov 2014), Colonel Brewery (Sep 2014), Fete de la Musique (Jul 2014), The Back Door (Jul 2014), Demo (Jul 2014), Gardenstate (Jun 2014), Yukunkun (Feb 2014), Long Beach (Aug 2013), AUB Outdoors (Jun 2013).
