Milonga Concert by Free Tango

The Alliance Francaise of Dubai will organize a Milonga Concert to make you discover the sensual blend of jazz and tango. Bringing specialy from France for this event, Sergio Cruz on the piano, and Olivier Manoury on the bandoneon. They have both a long past linked to Tango music.
 
Sergio Cruz played for many years in tango bands in Buenos Aires, and he first came to Paris with one of them, Sexteto Sur, to play with singer Adriana Varela in the mythical club Trottoir de Buenos Aires, in rue des Lombards
 
Olivier Manoury, because of the instrument he plays, always played tango music. He first accompanied singer and dancers in the same Trottoirs de Buenos Aires, and then leading his own bands, first Tangonéon, a pioneer band in contemporary tango in the early 80's, and then Tempo di Tango, a 7 piece tango orchestra, a duo with Uruguayan pianist Enrique Pascual who has been on the tango scene for over 25 years.
 
Strangely enough, they did not meet in Trottoirs de Buenos Aires but years later, in the same rue des lombards, ten meters away from where the club was in front of the Sunset, a famous Jazz club where Sergio was playing.
 
A first musical encounter revealed what their music had in common:
 
The melodic and harmonic heritage of tango, and the improvising technique, the invention and freedom of jazz.
 
If many experiments have been made to marry tango and Jazz since Astor Piazzolla, none of them was really based on improvisation (neither Gerry Mulligan nor Garry Burton improvised on Piazzolla's music).
 
With this duo  there is mostly improvisation, no written tunes, no established tonality but tango anyway, with the freedom to quote existing tunes and come back now and then to tonal language, and even to modal Argentinean folk  music.
 
The concert will be followed by the performance of two Argentinian tango dancers.
