She began to learn music when she was 9 and graduated from Tehran University in 1969 with a major in Arts. Her main focus is Iranian folk music. Sima Bina has been able to gather and revive a collection of almost forgotten Iranian folk songs and melodies. A captivating vocalist, she is one of the leading exponents of the traditional music of Khorasan. For decades she has done extensive research on Persian folk songs, collecting, recording, writing and re-interpreting popular regional music. Her works cover the whole spectrum of Iranian folk music including Mazandarani music, Kurdish music, Turkmen music, Baloch music and Lor music. A lifetime of dedicated work on Persian folk music has made Sima Bina a legendary character in the history of Iranian music and making her music known worldwide. While pursuing Iranian folk songs, Sima often came across a variety of ethnic lullabies which she added to her collected works. This collection finally led to her book, Iranian Lullabies in 2009. In this book, Sima Bina not only shares her findings, her perception, the scores and visual expression of the selected lullabies with mothers, she also presents forty original Iranian lullabies in four CDs in which her vocal is sometimes blended with the singing of the mothers who had song the lullabies to her in different parts of Iran. Sima continues to present Iranian folk songs in World Music festivals and concerts, while further exploring hidden folk songs in the vast plateau of Iran. ********************************************************** RANA FARHAN Bio: A unique fusion of classical Persian poetry with contemporary jazz and blues. Iranian artist Rana Farhan sings in a cool bluesy style that transcends time and erases all borders, wowing listeners worldwide. Now with the release of “Moon And Stone” her forth full length CD she continues to expand the boundaries and break new ground, combining jazz and blues with Classic Persian poetry, pushing it through to soul and even a hint of R&B. After recording and distributing a track called “Rumi’s Prayer” over the internet, the response from both American and International listeners was overwhelming. With a demand for more, Farhan and Toub, began writing and recording the album working off of both Rumi and Hafez, compiling one of the most sensitive fusions of two distant cultures. New York audiences, who were already caught up in Rana’s energy, and packing her performances at local clubs, were now joined by sold-out shows at the Cowell Theater in San Francisco, The Toronto Opera House in Toronto, Canada and at the Auditorium Cite De La Musique in Strasbourg, France. Rana has also recently headlined The Tirgan Festival in Toronto in July 2011.
