Grand Opening by Violin Legend

SOLOIST - Gil Shaham

CONDUCTOR - Sergey Smbatyan

ORCHESTRA - Malta Philharmonic Orchestra

For this very special opening concert of the Symphonic Middle East Festival 2022, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) conducted by their Principal Conductor, Sergey Smbatyan, will present a programme of concerto works by composers including Edvard Grieg, Alexey Shor, Claude Debussy and Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The concert will begin with Grieg’s popular Peer Gynt Suite No.1, a work derived from a larger body of music the composer wrote for Henrik Ibsen’s play of the same name. This is followed by Alexey Shor’s evocative Seascapes violin concerto, a work in four movements performed in this concert by the world-renowned multiple-times Grammy Award-winner, Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d’Or and Avery Fisher Prize recipient, American violinist, Gil Shaham. Divided into four distinct movements — Abandoned Lighthouse, Lonely Sail, Gathering Storm and Summer Hail — the concerto paints vivid pictures of scenes closely associated with the sea, featuring haunting melodic lines as well as complex technical passages. Following a short intermission, the orchestra will return with Debussy’s hugely famous Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (“Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun”), a symphonic poem composed in 1894 inspired by the poem L'après-midi d'un faune by Stéphane Mallarmé. The concert will conclude Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in D major, Op. 35, the composer’s only violin concerto and one that has established itself as a favourite of the repertoire due to the virtuosity and strong melodic content so idiomatic of Tchaikovksy’s prodigious output. This concert is presented by CMDI Group and SAMIT Event Group, with the support of the European Foundation for Support of Culture (EUFSC).
