The name Brazilian zouk is used to distinguish the dance from the Caribbean Zouk dance style, which is historically related to, but very different from the Lambada dance style. Zouk was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro where it was first developed and is danced among the most popular non-ballroom dances for couples in Brazil. Samba de Gafieira is a partner dance to the Brazilian samba musical rhytms and must be distinguished from the ballroom Samba, danced in International Latin and American ballroom dance styles. The style originated from samba dancing in cabarets and gafieiras (popular urban nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro in 1940s) and you can notice significant influence of Argentine Tango.
